Since the band, The Grateful Dead, was founded in 1965, I’m sure that the line is a more or less based on the folklore, but still contains a “shout-out” of sorts to the band.
The grateful dead “is a folktale present in many cultures throughout the world. The most common story involves a traveler who encounters a corpse of someone who never received a proper burial, typically stemming from an unpaid debt. The traveler then either pays off the dead person’s debt or pays for burial. The traveler is later rewarded or has their life saved by a person or animal who is actually the soul of the dead person; the grateful dead is a form of the donor.” (from wikipedia)
this show was fricken amazing. i had a theater workshop with gavin and a bunch of cast members. they are awesome. they are so nice. AND I GOT TO DANCE ON THE STAGE. if you go buy tickets up close it is seriously worth it.
I never understood that line “It’s not for lack of bread of bread. Like the Grateful Dead.” Did the Dead ever say they were to poor to afford haircuts? Was it a metaphor?
This is STUNNING. i remember watching it on the Tony’s and saying how much fun it looked like….
well i just came back from seeing the show on Saturday and have to say ITS EXACTLY LIKE THIS!!! The cast was absolutely STELLAR and just as fun-loving and crowd-interactive as they are in this performance. Awesome, SO SO SO AWESOME!!!
Yes they do…I’m bald and during this tune one of the girls in the company came up to me and rubbed her boobs on my head. Hysterical. GREAT GREAT show! See it if you can!
